Opening Up To Make a Difference
My name is Susie. I’m a wife, mother of three, and grandmother of three. And I’m a recent anal cancer survivor—stage 2 anal cancer—most likely caused from the HPV virus.
I had just gone to my OBGYN for my yearly Pap smear. Two months later, in the month of August, out of nowhere my booty itched. I was misdiagnosed with a fissure. Luckily I was a proactive person, that I knew I needed to seek additional help. Had I not done that, I might not be here today.
90% of us carry HPV. It’s a skin-to-skin contact virus—anybody can get it.
I have to be an advocate, and I have to be a steward, and I have to help the world be able to say “anal cancer.” Anal cancer is not ugly. It’s not an ugly word. We have to be able to say it, and we have to make a difference.
The inclusion of patient advocacy organizations does not imply endorsement of any organization or treatment.
